“It Came From a Book!” TRW Art Contest

Erinn Batykefer | August 16, 2012

The Library as Incubator Project, in partnership with TLT: Teen Librarian’s Toolbox, The Real Fauxtographer, and EgmontUSA, is hosting an epic Teen Read Week art contest “It Came From a Book!” The contest runs through September 30. We’re planning to collect a huge online gallery of the entries and announce the winners on the Library as Incubator Project website during Teen Read Week, October 14–20, 2012. Read on for more info on how teens can submit their library-incubated artwork and the prizes the winning teen could take home!

Here are the basics: teens can read any book and create a piece of art inspired by the story. The artwork can be any type—photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, manga—we want to see it all! Teens should submit a digital photograph of their work to trwartcontest2012@gmail.com by September 30, 2012, 11:59 pm CST. They should be sure to include the following information with their entry to ensure that it is eligible:

  • use the subject heading “TRW Art Contest”;
  • include full name, library name (school or public), and the title and author of the book that inspired the art; and
  • include the statement “I affirm that this is an original piece of artwork.”

During Teen Read Week, the Library as Incubator Project will host a digital art gallery of all entries to the “It Came From a Book!” TRW Art Contest, and we will also collect votes on the best library-incubated artwork. The winner will be announced on the site the following week!

Prizes include:

1. Re: Copyright--I would be inclined to argue fair use, because I assume this project is school related, one-time, and also (hopefully!) an awesome re-interpretation of cover art that communicated your teens' engagement with the story (Listed with correct credits/citations, of course!). Ultimately, that's up to your judgment.

2. Group: We didn't specify group projects, but I don't see a reason not to include them! Be advised that if the group's entry wins, they only get ONE prize package to share.

Dear Erinn,

I recently brought up this contest with 6th graders at a school library. Some of the students were wondering about two things; if a group art project could be submitted and if their work would be eligible if they created a poster that is a large hand-drawn version of the book's actual cover? As of right now I told them that I believe it would be breaking copyright and the contest's rules but I wanted to double check.

We're looking for art from anyone who is a teen. So a nineteen year old's submission would count. We also accept entries from artists who are 12 & up (not a teen, but middle school).

Dear Erinn,
I couldn´t find the age criterion. Could the nineteen years old participate in the contest?

Many thanks,
