How to Have a Haunted Halloween

Handmade spell books

About five years ago, I created a program called Haunted Library. Our Teen Advisory Group (TAG) really looked forward to this program every year. It was so awesome because they were fully invested.

At the William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University, library programming is supported by two full-time librarians, one full-time support staff person, and a team of student assistants. This is a far cry from where we were only a few years ago, when programming and outreach was led by a single librarian.*

For our Summer Reading Club end party this year we wanted to include physical literacy elements that got the kids moving and shaking as well as reading and listening. So in addition to our usual storytime/pizza party with cake (and healthy veggies!), we also created an outdoor fun zone of giant board games in the parking lot (blocked off to cars of course by orange pylons).
