With New Year’s resolutions kicking into effect, it is no surprise that this week marks Healthy Weight Week (January 20–26). Healthy Weight Week is a celebration of healthy diet-free living habits focused on the prevention of eating and weight problems. Once learned, these habits can be cultivated throughout life. Libraries help their users every day by providing knowledge and access to accurate, up-to-date, and fun ways to live full and healthy lives. Here are just a few examples of what libraries across the country are doing during this Healthy Weight Week and throughout the year.
The Clearview Library District of Windsor, Colorado, hosts Eat, Move, Live @ your library, a monthly series of programs for adults focusing on mental and physical well being. The program includes classes on health education, dance, yoga, and other physical fitness activities.
Manhasset (N.Y.) Public Library knows that gym memberships can be expensive, which is why the library offers Exercise @ your library, a series of eight exercise classes for $15 and a proof of a library card. The library also offers classes on nutrition, yoga, zumba, and strength training.
Through its virtual library, the Utah State Library provides access to Good Health Information @ your library. The site provides access to helpful and accurate websites on issues ranging from kids and senior health to information on state health agencies. Good Health Information @ your library also provides a toolkit for librarians to better assist their users.
The Bristol (Conn.) Public Library provides a range of free and unique classes through its Live Well @ your library program, including laughter yoga, which combines yoga, deep breathing, and, of course, laughter, to promote stress release and physical activity.
