Public Libraries Bridging Cultures: Exploring Islamic History

Is there a need in your library’s collection, and in your larger community, for authoritative and accessible resources about Muslim history, beliefs, and culture? The NEH grant initiative Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys will offer 1,000 libraries a collection of 25 books, three documentary films, and other resources to encourage exploration, conversation, understanding, and mutual respect between Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Experienced library programming experts will share their experiences presenting “Muslim Journeys” programs during the pilot phase, and offer ideas for submitting a successful grant proposal. Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the ALA Cultural Communities Fund.

eReader Classes for the Masses

The Pioneer Library System’s Virtual Library has been conducting classes on downloadable audiobooks and ebooks since January 2010. Initially we were lucky to get one staff person’s child to show up for class—and now our “Getting to Know Your eReader” courses are standing room only. So how do we do it? This webinar will look briefly at: how we started conducting these classes—staff, materials, and equipment involved—as well as the best practices for promoting, designing, and carrying out eReader classes for the masses in your community.

Bringing STEM Learning to Public Libraries: Collaboration and Resources for Librarians

Many libraries want to introduce STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) into their programming to attract new audiences and help stimulate children’s interest in science. You will learn about the STAR Library Education Network (STAR_Net) led by the National Center for Interactive Learning (NCIL) at the Space Science Institute. STAR_Net Librarians and others who are successfully programming STEM will also share their strategies for connecting with community resources. STAR_Net is forming a Community of Practice (CoP) for librarians and scientists who want to create innovative STEM programs. Details about the STAR_Net CoP and how to join it will also be shared.
