The posters were used in the third through sixth grade art classes: Famous American Artists. Students each select an artist, study their lives and works, and write a comprehensive paper. Also in the fourth grade technology classes, the posters were used as a pivotal point to discover American museums and major works of arts. These works inspired library students to find books on the artists and study the time periods throughout history these works were created during. The posters have single handedly greatly increased our check-out rates for non-fiction.
The Picturing America set was presented to our faculty during a workshop session so all staff would be aware of the extensive lesson plans provided and the wealth of material. During our Fall parent open house, the library was presented as an art gallery and parents were able to view the works with their children. The local newspaper documented the evening and gave a complete description of the Picturing America grant.
We will continue to display these remarkable pieces of art in our school. The fine quality of lamination will ensure years of enjoyment and usage by our students, faculty, and community. Since we are fifty miles from the nearest museum or art gallery and 916 air miles from the Smithsonian, this collection is the first time many of our students have been able to revel in the masters. It has increased their interest in seeking out other works of art and in being aware of all the art around them.
