Picturing America Programs for Youth
Using The Whole Book Approach in Picturing America Programs
The Whole Book Approach
is an interactive method of sharing picture books that involves the text, art, and design of the book in order to appreciate the book in its entirety. It is a wonderful method to use with any picture book containing notable art and design, but it is a particularly worthwhile approach for Picturing America programs, given the focus on visual content.
Guides for Youth Programming
Staff at the District of Columbia Public Library used The Whole Book Approach
and Visual Thinking Strategies
to shape their Picturing America programming efforts. For background information about the DCPL program development process, please see the related blog entry
in ProgrammingLibrarian.org. The image-specific programming guides include information about the image and artist, historical background, programming ideas for children and teens, and a bibliography of relevant materials.
